Social Responsibility
Social responsibility is an important part of Black Hills Corporation. We embrace it wholeheartedly by being good environmental stewards, by giving to worthwhile philanthropic projects, by taking leadership roles in community organizations and by encouraging our employees to volunteer.
From organizing a blood drive or coaching a youth sports team to raising funds or serving on a nonprofit board, our employees help out when they’re called upon, wherever they live. Our employees donate tens of thousands of hours in service to our communities each year.
Black Hills Corporation is committed to improving life with energy in the communities it serves. Through corporate contributions, employee contributions and volunteerism, the Company assumes a leadership role in community-building.
Contribution Guidelines
Major areas that have received Black Hills Corporation funding in the past are:
- Human Services
- Civic and Community Development
- Education
- Arts and Culture
- Environment
Although the committee considers each request on its own merits, the following kinds of requests are less likely to be approved than others:
- Organizations that do not serve the Black Hills Corporation service territory.
- Organizations and programs primarily designed to influence legislation.
- Religious organizations for religious purposes.
- Grants to individuals or organizations that are not designated by the IRS to be 501(c)(3) nonprofits.
- Proposals for conferences, seminars or festivals.
- Individual or group trips, tours or pageants.
- Single disease research programs.
- Endowment campaigns.
- Requests to fund deficit operating expenses.
- Athletic sponsorships.
Contribution Proposal Guidelines
A contribution request should contain the following items:
- A brief description of the organization, its history, purpose, and number of people served.
- A copy of its tax-exempt status letter under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code.
- A list of officers and board of directors.
- The amount being requested.
- The purpose of the funds; if project support is requested, a timeline for implementation and evaluation of project should be included.
- A complete budget for the organization/project, including a listing of major contributors.
- An audited financial statement for the organization’s previous fiscal year.
